HALEY WEAVER - AN INTERVIEW

Haley is a creative illustrator who draws about current events, experiences we all face like love and loss as well as the weather! Check out her awesome images and interview below.

Who are you and what do you do? 

I’m Haley Weaver, a 26-year-old illustrator based in Seattle, WA. I share webcomics on my Instagram account (@haleydrewthis) and do freelance illustration work for brands and companies. 

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE A HAND DRAWN STYLE THAT WE SEE MOSTLY ON YOUR INSTAGRAM?

I’ve always loved doodling. When I first started my art account, my goal was to draw regularly while making art that connected with people. I think my style has transformed over the years, but still feels rooted in that original goal.

WHAT INSPIRED THE "MONTH" AS A PERSON DRAWINGS? 

The original “January as a person” was one of the first drawings I shared online! I enjoy approaching topics in unusual ways, and personifying the months was a fun challenge. As my account grew, my audience's love for the months grew too. I’m glad they resonate with people, because they're really fun to make.

WHERE DID YOU GO TO COLLEGE? 

I WENT TO GETTYSBURG COLLEGE, WHICH IS A SMALL LIBERAL ARTS SCHOOL IN — YOU GUESSED IT! — GETTYSBURG, PA. I STUDIED ENGLISH WITH A WRITING CONCENTRATION AND COMPETED ON THE SWIM TEAM. AND, OF COURSE, I TOOK A CIVIL WAR COURSE.

WHY DO YOU LOVE DRAWING? 

I’ve found that sitting down and focusing on drawing — like penning the curve of a circle or the corner of a square — helps me feel present and connected rather than high strung and worried. It makes my brain feel less like a livewire and more like a spark.

Fun questions

If you stranded on an island what five items would you want with you?

Assuming I am able to charge electronics and have WiFi (hey, you said no rules!), I’d definitely bring my iPad and phone for drawing, Facetime calls, books, and access to articles about survival skills — I’m realizing how great it is to have access to a wide breadth of people and content, especially during this quarantine. Otherwise, sunscreen, a water filter, and a boat. 

If you could travel in time to any century and do drawing and comics about that period where would you go? 

I THINK I’D GO BACK TO THE 1960S DURING THE BEGINNING OF THE WOMEN’S LIBERATION MOVEMENT. I THINK IT’D BE REALLY FUN TO CREATE COMICS ABOUT WOMEN STANDING UP FOR THEIR RIGHTS. AND, OF COURSE, THE FASHION OF THAT TIME WOULD BE FUN TO INTEGRATE INTO MY ART.
